His great loves are scuba diving and marine painting, particularly underwater scenes that include wreckage of planes and ships. His mentor and close friend is the wildlife artist Lee Kromschroeder, who encouraged him to paint what he wanted and to use acrylics.
He spent his childhood in California, where his father made a living by selling his paintings of western scenes, something he wanted Randall to do. But Randall insisted on doing his own thing. He spend his time exploring the Pacific Coast, and developing his fascination for oceanography and sea life, while his passion for art was fuelled by his father, a landscape artist and his mother, a natural watercolorist. He is now one of the finest underwater world artist.
